I've been involved in small town politics, both here in the US and then over in England where I lived for 20 years, and what I found is that small town politics is no different. In both places it is basically a "good old boy" network. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. Money is wasted on stupid things, depending on what prominent business figure has the most influence. And NOTHING ever gets done!
Now extrapolate that up to the county level, and city level and it only gets worse. Imagine this same good old boy network at a state level and finally federal level? It's a money making opportunity for any good intentioned person going into politics for the "right" reasons. It's inevitable.
You are correct. We need to get rid of lobbyists. We need to set ip term limits. Get rid of the old codgers who know how to work the system. Get in some fresh blood to flush the pipes.
No matter how "good intentioned" you are going in, you have to play the game if you want to survive. Soon those "good intentions get twisted into how to survive the system.
In any other system we would call it grooming. And it takes a strong heart not to be sucked in. And it all starts with a simple pat on the back, by someone you might respect, telling you, you are doing a good job. You'll fit right in and go far.
And before you know it, you become part of the sludge that sticks to the pipe walls, corrupting and profiting from everything that passes your way.
