In what era have the poor ever been obese, like in America? This is an American creation that not only creates dependency on the government, but dogs our health care as well, because we all know you are what you eat.
As in everything government touches, SNAP reform is desperately needed. Fraud is also a big issue, but that could be eliminated by going back to a more sensible program, like designing a warehouse distribution center that has only nutritious food, but also with a requirement that all receivers who are able-bodied put in hours at the warehouse to stock shelves, etc.
We could save a lot of money and decrease the level of obesity just by having people pick up their nutritious food at a warehouse – with a requirement that all able-bodied people put in hours to stock shelves, etc.: https://lizlasorte.substack.com/p/well-snap-yall?r=76q58
Getting junk food off Food Stamps is a great start. But there is much more to be done. Work requirements are needed for the able. Eligible food items should be listed much like WIC. Staples only, so needs can be met while reducing the financial load on the nation. The whole focus of ALL welfare programs should be need and not want. Remember Obama phones. Remember commodities. As a nation, when we buy it we need to pay for it. That would stop a lot of the nonsense. Putting it on the National credit card allows us all to live on Food Stamps.
Thanks for the note, Al. I'm sure you're aware that Arkansas and I believe 11 or 12 other states have filed for and received waivers on SNAP that limits the items that can be bought with the EBT card. It's not perfect but it's a start.
I agree with staples only - now we need the government to agree as well.
Work requirements are absolutely necessary - the pride in having earned your food rather than being the recipient of pure charity cannot be over-emphasized.
The problem, of course, is and always was a government that trolls for votes by "giving stuff away". Of course they don't take the unintended consequences in account, not the increased tax burden on productive citizens. All they worry about is reelection, and that's the root of the problem.
Many will sell their SNAP benefits at 50 cents on the dollar. It’s how they get by. Always broke. Always borrowing money.
What gets me is how it went down. November! Thanksgiving…
We support the government of the Ukrainian, but can’t feed our own people. We support Israel wars, yet can’t feed our own peoples. We are about to take over Venezuela, yet we can’t feed our own people. We can bail out Argentina, but can’t feed our own people. So, we can fund stuff all day long, we just can’t feed our own peoples.
This is not the peoples fault. This is the government’s fault. Who literally begged for these people to get on food stamps?
Ever hear of mountain pride? Well, the government aimed to destroy that kind of thinking and sent welfare officers in to tell the mountain folks that welfare was their right! Yes, this really happened.
So whatever. I don’t use SNAP, but I know plenty that do, and these people would not be dependent on it has the government not told them it was their right.
I agree with all that you say - Food Stamps, SNAP, you name it, was and is the government replacing local groups taking care of local problems in order to increase dependency and solidify their hold on the electorate. I'd bet that some of the legislators who pushed these programs thought they were doing "good", not realizing they were creating a monster. The government did encourage dependency in a whole slew of ways, not just SNAP. However it began, we must find a way to end it. Make people work for their SNAP benefits if nothing else. At least then they'd have pride in having earned their food.
A few thoughts on SNAP

Excellent suggestion, excellent article. Thanks.
Thank you. I wish we could implement it...
